Overview
The Gokyo Lakes trek is the Everest region's most beautiful alternative to Base Camp — and many experienced Himalayan trekkers argue the view from Gokyo Ri is superior to anything on the EBC route. The six emerald-green glacial lakes, sitting at between 4,700m and 5,000m in a valley carved by the Ngozumpa Glacier (Nepal's largest), are extraordinary. But it's the 5,357m summit of Gokyo Ri that stops people in their tracks.
From Gokyo Ri you see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu simultaneously — four of the world's six highest peaks from a single viewpoint. The Ngozumpa Glacier spreads below you in every shade of grey and blue. The lake district glitters at your feet. It's legitimately one of the great mountain views on the planet.
The route follows the classic Everest trail from Lukla to Namche, then diverges west up the Dudh Koshi valley toward the lakes rather than continuing east to Base Camp. This makes a natural circuit possible when combined with the Cho La pass crossing to Base Camp — one of the finest high routes in the Himalaya.
Highlights
- Gokyo Ri Summit (5,357m) — Four 8,000m peaks visible simultaneously — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu — plus the Ngozumpa Glacier and all six Gokyo Lakes
- Gokyo Lakes — Six turquoise glacial lakes between 4,700m and 5,000m — the highest freshwater lake system in the world, sacred to Hindus
- Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's largest glacier spreads across the entire valley — walk its lateral moraine and understand the scale of Himalayan ice
- Cho La Pass Option (5,420m) — A challenging glacier crossing that connects Gokyo to the Everest Base Camp route — combine both for the ultimate Everest region circuit
- Namche Bazaar — The Khumbu's thriving Sherpa market town — acclimatize here over two nights and explore the Saturday market, bakeries, and mountain museum
- Sherpa Villages — The Dudh Koshi valley is lined with ancient Sherpa settlements, chortens, and mani walls dating back centuries
