Overview
Langtang is the closest high-altitude valley to Kathmandu, and one of the least appreciated major treks in Nepal. The approach from Syabrubesi is steep and immediately wild — within two days you're above 3,000m in a landscape of ancient fir forests, yak pastures, and Tamang villages that feel genuinely unchanged by tourism.
The 2015 earthquake devastated Langtang village, and the rebuilt community has become a testament to resilience. The rebuilt lodges are among the best on any Nepal trail, and the welcome here is warm and personal. The valley head at Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m) opens into a wide glacial plain with views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m) filling the entire northern horizon.
For trekkers who want serious mountains without two weeks and a domestic flight, Langtang is the answer. The bus from Kathmandu drops you at the trailhead, and seven days later you're back — having walked through some of the most beautiful country in the Himalayas.
Highlights
- Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m) — The high valley settlement with a centuries-old monastery, famous yak cheese factory, and unobstructed views of Langtang Lirung
- Tserko Ri (4,984m) — A half-day hike from Kyanjin that rewards with panoramic views of the Langtang, Jugal, and Ganesh Himal ranges
- Langtang Yak Cheese — The valley has produced cheese since Swiss development workers introduced the practice in the 1950s — best eaten warm from the factory
- Tamang Heritage Trail — Route variants pass through Tamang villages where Buddhism is practised in its most traditional form, with ancient gompas at every bend
- Bamboo Forest Section — A trail section so dense with giant bamboo it forms a tunnel — home to red pandas (rarely seen, but present)
- Gosainkunda Lakes Option — A 2-day extension to sacred alpine lakes at 4,380m, pilgrimage destination for thousands of Hindus each August
